SEO Services For Webmasters:
What It Means

Although the term "webmaster" has connoted knowledge of everything "Web" in the past, webmasters are now turning to another group: SEO experts, or those who are a lot wiser in the methods of search marketing, and manipulating search engine results. Since this area of knowledge is so intimidating, many companies opt to pay for SEO services rather than saddling their marketing department with the vagaries of PPC and the optimisation of a company's website.

How To Find An SEO Expert

The question of where to find SEO experts depends entirely on the nature of the service which is sought. Most SEO companies set out to increase the rank of a particular page, when an individual keyword or long-tail keyword is entered into a search engine, usually Google or Yahoo. Because this ranking (not Page rank, we'll get to that in a minute) determines how many eyeballs are likely to see a business's official site, companies and marketers will focus on how to move a page up the list.

So, how is it done?

Google bases the relevance of a particular site on a system called Page rank, which is actually named after a Larry Page, from Google. Every site links to other sites, and those pages which are linked to a large number of popular sites (sites which receive a great deal of traffic) are naturally ranked higher than sites which are linked to low-traffic pages or have no links at all.

The idea is that users who follow the links on a site have found the information on that site to be valuable. So, you may be getting some idea as to how SEO services are able to increase the Page rank of a given page, which then increases the likelihood of "showing up" on Google for the most relevant keywords to a service or product.

SEO companies offer services which many individuals and even marketing departments are not able to provide

Hosts of linkers and writers combine their efforts to create content which points users not only to your site, but to other sites with a high rank, which then point to your site. This process may seem simple, but it's actually quite tedious, and requires a high level of skill and labour. At the same time, the increase in competition providing these services has caused prices to lower. For those who have not used such services before, be prepared to shop around, and to try a few out. In the end, every service will affect how your site looks to a search engine, and these changes may be good or bad.

Avoid organisations and certain sub-par SEO services who may use spam or other low-targeting methods to deliver any amount of traffic, only ensuring that they get paid, and not that a business website makes any additional sales. Short-term methods aimed to spike traffic are not sustainable and the search engines will often punish such actions in the longer term. Remember the objective is consistency and the establishment of a good reputation online, so great care is required.
